Declan watched Madisen until she was lost from view. Lunch had been enlightening.

He scratched at his few days’ growth. His facial hair and sunglasses were enough that Madisen hadn’t recognized him.

A short laugh escaped his lips. Unbelievable. He strummed his fingers on the table as he stared off into space, his mind replaying all their interactions since seeing her in his office and thinking she’d tricked him.

The charity event. It’d been sweet torture being with her. The pull of attraction he had felt breached holes in his defenses that night, nearly causing him to forget everything but the beautiful woman next to him. She elicited feelings that he had long since buried. Attraction. Desire. Protection. Jealousy.

He clenched his fist at the memory of seeing her dancing with Erik. He’d promised to protect her that night. When he saw the worried look that she cast his way, it took all his willpower not to barrel through the crowd to reach her. He’d quickly excused himself from Mr. Harrison.

Angry with himself for breaking his promise, they’d danced while he silently berated himself. When she’d confessed that she’d enjoyed dancing with Erik, white-hot jealousy had surged through him faster than an angry mob on Black Friday. The fact he’d admitted his relief at her explanation showed how much she’d broken through his barriers. Thank goodness he’d come back to his senses before he’d kissed her.

He’d thought she was so different from all the other women in the room until he remembered it was all an act, which had snapped him back to reality. He’d gotten angry again at her—for making him feel things he didn’t want and breaking through his defenses once again. He was grateful for the extra days away from the office.

Until he saw Madisen in the café and all those feelings came rushing back, he had been leery and on edge until he realized that she truly thought Ken and he were two separate people. He huffed out a laugh, an invisible weight lifting from his chest.

Madisen’s innocence wasn’t contrived. She hadn’t been trying to pull one over him after all. But he’d pulled one over on her. Oh, the irony.

He scrubbed a hand down his face. Now that he knew the truth, he no longer needed to fight his growing attraction to her, but two things stood in the way. One, she was his employee. Two, she’d likely hate him once she found out he was Ken and Declan.

He’d planned to grab some food here and head to the office for a few hours, but that was no longer an option. He rubbed his chin as an idea started to form. This could turn out really well or go horribly wrong, but it was worth the risk.
